My Essential Survival Kit

So Kate, tell us: what are your 4 or 5 essential do-or-die items? What can you not live without?

1. Coffee: This would probably be more accurate as "general caffeine," but coffee is my favorite source. I joke about being addicted to the stuff, but I'm actually more serious than I'd like to admit. The communication department at VT made t-shirts one year that had all sorts of communication-major inside jokes on the back. One of those was, "Caffeine is necessary to my continued health." It's not far off. We would die without it.

2. Warmth: A side effect of being a born-and-raised Southerner is that I get cold super easily. No kidding, I'm cold from October until April. During these months, I am constantly bundled up in my favorite coat and scarf, and when I'm inside, I'm wrapped in a blanket in my comfiest sweatpants and sweatshirt. I just really hate being cold, so warmth is an absolute must.

3. Watch: Sometimes I feel like I am one of the few people who has not converted to relying on my phone for time. I have worn a watch ever since elementary school, and I feel naked without it. Citizen Eco-Drive watches are my favorites. They run on solar power, so you never have to replace the battery. It's just fantastic.

4. Pen & paper: As long as I have something to write with and to write on, I'm happy.

5. Lucky Duck: Some people have stones, or rabbit's feet, or a keychain, or a scrunchie a la Legally Blonde, or something like that, but my good-luck charm is my Lucky Duck. I bought him on April 9, 2009, the day UNC won the NCAA men's basketball championship. He's been my good-luck charm ever since, and he goes almost everywhere with me.
