Say 'No' to Negativity, Be Positive Every Day

Everyone struggles with negativity in some way, shape, form or fashion. It's a part of life; it just happens sometimes. We experience it at different times, to varying degrees, and everyone responds to it in different ways.

Lately I've battled some negativity and doubts in my own life. I worry about finding a job, moving after school, getting through school, my relationships with family and friends, and pursuing my dream of being a writer almost daily. In an honest moment, sometimes it's hard to remind myself that I've already accomplished so much in my 23 years, that I have so much going for me, that I will meet my dream and be a successful writer. Fears and doubts get in the way of positivity, and then I have to push the negative thoughts away.

Can you relate? Have you ever felt negativity weighing you down?

Well, you can't let it get you down. I know that's easier said than done, as many things in life are. Today, I'm going to help you battle negativity and be happy and positive. I'm sharing my tips on how I combat negativity in my life, even when it's difficult. When I keep these ideas in mind, I feel so much better and my outlook changes.

battling negativity, how to be positive

First, cut out all sources of negativity or things that aggravate you. Is there someone on your social networks who, 9 times out of 10, when they post, you just get frustrated or annoyed? Do you have a "friend" or another acquaintance who puts you down to make him/herself feel better? Thank God for "unfollow" options. Hitting that one button makes life so much easier. No one needs that kind of negativity. Ever. See this.

Listen to happy music. Sure, there is a time and place for a sad song, and sometimes you need a good cry. But when that moment has passed, find a happy song and have a dance party for one. Dancing releases endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. My personal favorite is "Happy" by Pharrell Williams.

Take time at night, before you go to bed, to reflect on what happened that day. Think back and find one thing that day that made you smile. It doesn't matter how big or small that thing was, just that it made you smile. Write it down, if you'd like. I challenge you to do this every night for a certain time period. Perhaps start with a week, or two weeks, and then build up to when you do this as often as possible.

Wake up every morning with a smile. Make the first thing you see in the morning something that makes you smile. Set a picture of a fond memory on your nightstand or dresser, wherever you'll see it early in your morning routine. Find an inspiring or motivational quote, write it on a sticky note, and stick it on your bathroom mirror. Start every day with a smile and a positive thought.

Finally, remember that happiness lies within you. Having a positive outlook is ultimately your decision. At some point, a switch will flip, and you'll wonder how all those negative thoughts, fears and doubts ever got inside your mind. Let positivity be your best friend.

How do you stay happy and positive in your life?
